Pastor David Jang: The Grace and Hope of No Condemnation

Following Pastor David Jang’s meditation on Romans 8, this reflection calmly explores the gospel’s grace beyond condemnation and self-reproach, the assurance of salvation, and the hope Christ’s intercession gives to faith today. It invites a wavering heart to hear peace again within God’s verdict.

Like a person standing before a closed door, waiting for an unnamed verdict, the human heart is sometimes held captive for a long time by the accuser within. If Kafka’s The Trial reveals the atmosphere of guilt whose cause remains unknown, then Romans 8:31–34, as upheld in the preaching of Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University in the United States, lets an entirely different voice be heard in the middle of that courtroom. The gospel is not the way by which we prove our own innocence. It is the hearing of God’s gracious declaration that, in Christ, we have already been justified. At the center of this word stands the assurance of salvation that overcomes condemnation, and the love of God that holds wavering believers to the end.

The Gospel’s Assurance Echoing in the Courtroom of Condemnation

Paul asks, “What then shall we say to these things?” The sermon explains that “these things” refers to the preceding flow of Romans 8: foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. Within human time, weakness is still visible, failure remains, and completion appears far away. Yet from God’s perspective, this salvation is not a wavering possibility but a promise already held firm.

In particular, the phrase “He also glorified” offers deep comfort because it speaks of a future glory as though, from God’s side, it were already a settled reality. When believers look only at their present condition, it is difficult to imagine the completion of salvation. But the gospel says that God’s purpose and calling are deeper than our present incompleteness. Assurance of salvation is not an optimism that denies one’s condition. It is trust that the God who began the work will also bring it to completion.

Therefore, the question “If God is for us, who can be against us?” does not mean that every real enemy has disappeared. There is suffering, there is temptation, and inner anxiety still remains. Yet none of these can overturn the destiny of one whom God has justified. The hope of the believer is not comfort that is valid only on days when emotions are clear. It is the foundation of the gospel: even on days when emotions grow cloudy, God’s verdict does not change.

Pastor David Jang explains this point deeply through the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. This theological insight—that God holds to the end those whom He has called—is not a flimsy consolation that makes human responsibility light. Rather, it is the deepest reason we can rise again even after falling. Grace precedes our resolve, and even when our grip grows weak, it remains as the love by which God, on His side, does not let go.

Grace Is Deeper Than Self-Reproach, and Faith Hears the Verdict Again

In the life of faith, the most frightening enemy is sometimes not an attack from outside but the voice of self-reproach heard within. Questions such as “Am I truly saved?” and “Will God still hold on to someone as weak as I am?” may appear to be devout self-examination. But if we remain there too long, they become a trap that makes our own judgment greater than the gospel. At this point, the sermon lets us hear Paul’s question once again: “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?”

If the One who justifies is God, then human accusation cannot become the final verdict. This does not mean sin is treated lightly. Repentance is not the act of covering sin, but the way of returning into God’s mercy, which is greater than sin. Therefore, true repentance is not an endless act of punishing oneself. It is obedience that lays down false condemnation before the blood of Christ and receives grace again.

Here, faith becomes an attitude more solid than emotional uplift. We do not believe in God’s love because our hearts are peaceful. Rather, because God’s love has first been declared, we place our wavering hearts under that word. Pastor David Jang’s sermon restores the truth that God chose and called us as the foundation of faith. If the ground of salvation is not the strength with which I hold on to God, but the grace by which God holds on to me, then self-condemnation can no longer be the master of the soul.

The story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8 shines a clear light on this gospel. The people stood in a place of condemnation with stones in their hands, but Jesus said, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” Finally, He declared, “Neither do I condemn you.” If the sinless One did not condemn her, how quickly should sinners put down the stones they raise against other sinners? Before this word, faith quietly lays down not only the stones directed at oneself, but also the stones once held toward others.

Before Christ’s Intercession, Love Loses Its Fear

Romans 8:34 leads the believer’s assurance to an even deeper place. The fact that Christ, who died and rose again, is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us shows that salvation does not remain merely an event of the past. The cross is the place of grace where the price of sin was paid, and the resurrection is the sign of hope that the power of death has ended. And even now, the Lord remains as the great High Priest who intercedes for the saints.

This intercession is not comfort needed only on days when prayer comes easily. Rather, it is the gospel that becomes most clear when prayer is blocked, when the heart collapses, and when one feels unworthy to come before God. Even when the believer’s own words become poor, the believer is not utterly abandoned. This is because Christ’s intercession stands before God ahead of us.

The sermon explains the meaning of this intercession through the image of a courtroom. There are many times when we stand like defendants who lack the words to defend ourselves, but Christ stands as the perfect Advocate. Seen through the eyes of the law, there is sin to be exposed. Yet the Lord declares that He has already paid its price with His own blood. Thus Paul’s question, “Who is to condemn?” is not mere rhetoric. It becomes a bold confession established upon Christ’s present intercession.

This assurance does not stop at personal peace. Those who have been released from condemnation do not try to prove themselves by condemning others. Those who know the depth of their own acceptance learn the language of acceptance and restoration within the community as well. Love is not an ornament of the gospel. It is the quiet yet unmistakable fruit that grace bears in life.

Even on Shaken Days, Hope Stands on God’s Side

The perseverance of the saints does not mean there is no wavering. It means that, even in the midst of wavering, God holds His people. Believers can still fall, prayer can become blocked, and they can still face the dark textures of the heart. Yet each time, meditation on Scripture does not push us into the prison of self-judgment. It brings us again before God’s verdict. The word “It is God who justifies” teaches us that the final language of the soul is not human accusation, but God’s grace.

Therefore, shalom is not the calm that comes because circumstances have become quiet. It is the rest that arises when the gospel truth that God is for us takes root deep in the heart. This rest does not deny reality, yet it does not give fear the final seat. The assurance that God, who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, will not withdraw His love for the saints enables us to walk again through a wavering day.

The benefit this sermon leaves for faith today is clear. Assurance of salvation is not spiritual arrogance but the root of gratitude, and repentance is not a habit of despair but the door back into grace. Those who deeply meditate on the gospel of no condemnation learn how to deal with the fear within themselves, and at the same time learn a slower, more careful love toward others. The gospel begins in the hidden courtroom of the heart, but in the end it changes even the way we speak, relate, and obey.

The word also does not deny fear; it redirects it. Paul’s question does not erase the affliction and weakness believers experience. Rather, it teaches us to see all these things within the greater love of God. Thus the boldness of faith is not an attitude that tries to appear strong. It is the humble courage that holds on to the fact that, even in weakness, God is already for us.

The conclusion of the word is simple, yet deep. Salvation was begun by God, confirmed by Christ’s blood, and is still held within the love of the One who intercedes even now. Therefore, faith does not remain trapped in the question, “Why am I still so weak?” Instead, it moves into the meditation, “How does God hold on to someone as weak as me to the very end?” In the place where the voice of condemnation has ceased, we finally learn the language of love. What voice is echoing most loudly in the courtroom of our hearts today? And deeper than that voice, are we hearing again the gracious verdict God has already spoken?

Dr. David Jang has proclaimed the gospel in various regions of the world through field missions and digital media ministry, and as the fruit of that ministry, many people devoted to the Great Commission have been raised up. Based on this missionary vision, Olivet first began as a small church school for missionary training. Later, in order to provide more systematic theological education and cultivate missionary leaders, Olivet Theological College and Seminary was established in Los Angeles and Seoul in 2000.

As the school grew, Dr. Jang officially founded Olivet University in San Francisco in 2004. In the diverse and dynamic environment of San Francisco, Olivet expanded its educational fields beyond theology to include music, journalism, art and design, and technology. The university also strengthened its educational capacity by recruiting faculty members, including Dr. William Wagner, and in 2005 moved to the former UC Berkeley Downtown Extension campus, further solidifying its foundation as a university.

In 2006, Dr. Jang transferred the presidency to Dr. David James Randolph in order to focus more fully on missionary work, while continuing to lead global missions as International President. Olivet University later received institutional accreditation in 2009, added a language education college and a business college, and continued to grow as a Christian educational institution for world missions by expanding its degree programs and international partnerships.
